I have a LAN with 2 Win2K machines and 4 XP machines and they all recognize
each other.
The most common reason for machines on a TCP/IP LAN not to recognize each
other is failing to make them members of the same workgroup. Another reason
is a firewall on the machine; it has to have an opening for the TCP/IP LAN.
My LAN's DHCP server issues local IP addresses in the 192.168.x.x range, and
the firewalls all open this up (this is a purely local range). Remember that
XP has a firewall built in.
Also, a user trying to log on to another machine on the network has to be a
recognized user on that machine.
NetBEUI is very simple (and old) technology that doesn't use workgroups or
domains. It's also not secure.

Subject: XP Lan connect to Win2000 solution
FYI:
XP on new machine.
Win2000 on 2 other machines.
Couldn't recognize eachother. Had to
install NetBEUI- it is NOT installed by XP
but it is on the XP disk! it must be installed and enabled. On my lan
anyway.
(it took 3 of us 2 hours to figure that one out- we were rolling with
laughter after we solved it-
it's not IN any manual, or book that we had: just one of those things you
figure out..)
Best Wishes,
