Installing applications directly off the root is the way to go. For example
Office should be in E:\Office\. Using Microsoft's bizzare method C:\Program
Files\Office makes no sense whatsoever. What good is the Program Files
part - just adds another layer to the directory tree but does nothing to
physically separate the different kinds of software into partitions which
does have a material advantage.
"Program Files" are automatically picked up during a reinstallation.
You can wipe out \Windows\, reinstall and have most 'Program Files'
picked up and added, saving additional effort.
If the partitions are all on the same physical drive, then running a
defragmenter while operating some complex program just adds a lot of
head movement. Separate physical drives work best for such a setup.
I actually utilize an 8 drive striped mirrors raid array, it is the
fastest and most redundant but the least storage combination. Looks
like a big disk to the OS.
