To mix Windows and Linux you have few alternatives.
- VMware. It is a virtual machine that allows you to install Windows
XP/2000 on your Linux computer. Compatibility is 100% however there is a
performance hit due to the heavy processing requirements for the virtual
machine. http://www.vmware.com/
- Win4Lin. This creates a Windows 98 environment on your Linux computer.
It is not 100% compatible but still pretty good. It runs at native
performance speeds. http://www.netraverse.com/
- WINE. Open Source (free) software that implements Windows API and
allows lots of Windows applictions to run. http://www.winehq.com/
- CrossOver Office and Plugin. Low-cost, Wine-based API layer allowing
popular applications (Office, Photoshop, etc.) and media plugins (e.g.
video / audio formats specific to Windows) to run on Linux.

Another good alternative is to use a Mac with OSX and Virtual PC. You
then get the best of both worlds: the best graphical user interface on
this planet, a UNIX kernel, Windows compatibility.
