The military is currently less than 10% of the total budget.  Not to mention
that fact the "providing for the common defense" is one of the legitimate
purposes of the federal government.  Entitlements are not a legitimate
purpose of the federal government.  They are vote-buying programs sponsored
by career politicians.

That's certainly a big part of it.  100 years ago we were a
modest little country.  Prospering, on the seemingly unlimited
resources we were blessed with, but practically still second
world.

Now we're running (or "influencing") the politics of half the
world, and projecting military might around the globe.  That
doesn't come for free.

100 years ago there were also no entitlement programs.  No Social
Security, no Medicare, no welfare, no nothin'.  Guess who pays
for those.
