Ian,
Most likely your data is corrupt and it is reindexing when you open it
again. If you are running Windows 2000 or XP you can open the task
manager and go to the processes tab then look down the list for
Server.exe. That's it the GS. You may have to format the columns to
add the ones that show disk writes. I just add all the columns. The
time it takes to reindex depends on the size of your data and the
speed of your machine. Example is my machine is dual 850 processors
with a brand new serial ATA drive and I have 14 gig of data in the PDS
folder. It takes about 4 to 5 hours to reindex my data.
One thing I do is just rename the PDS folder PDS corrupt 073103 then
restart the GS. It will collect data for the rest of the day then
MAYBE it will let you export it. Then you cut and paste the old data
from the corrupt file and open the GS and let it reindex the old data.
When it finished I usually run nightly maint. but you may not need to
then close the GS and reboot. Then import the data you exported.
Most of the time it works.
If the GS throws an error on me I always open the task manager in XP
Pro then use it to tell the computer to shut down. The GS puts up
that box about "Are you sure" and I quickly click yes. If a Windows
window pops up "program not responding" I X it off or use Cancel fast
before it tries to close the GS forcefully. This works nearly all the
time. Saves the forced shutdown and then reindexing.
Guess that made your day.
