Re: [Off Topic] How to block messages

For those using Windows 2000, there are several security loopholes
(a.k.a. administrator conveniences) that should be closed for standalone
or small-LAN users. The Center for Internet Security has established
security benchmarks at www.cisecurity.org . Incidentally, Dell
Computers recently announced these benchmarks will be adopted in
pre-configuring their new systems.

CIS has a benchmark scanning tool, but I don't like downloading and
installing unknown .exe files, so I did the modifications manually using
the Windows 2000 Professional Benchmark Level II (Consensus
Baseline Security Settings) document file. It was an interesting and
highly recommended education.

Microsoft also has a new Baseline Security Analyzer available free at:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?displaylang=en&familyid=E987AB2F-3C97-4FDC-AA7B-21992FF9AF7A
I noticed MBSA accessing the internet during its scan -- presumably
to check for security updates. That kind of things always makes me
nervous, so I just configured my firewall settings to block future
accesses without my approval.

Regards.

Thanks for reminding me guys. I reinstalled XP a while back and forgot
to disable the Messenger service.

In Win XP:
Start - Programs - Administrative Tools - Services
Right click Messenger and choose Properties
Click the Dependencies tab to see if anything you care about depends on
  the Messenger service
If not, click the General tab, change Startup to Disabled, change Status
  to Stopped
