Although this might not be a solution where a HD is
about to fail from overheating this might prove useful
to others who have corrupted their OS and trying to
recover data.
I've used 'EBCD – Emergency Boot CD' from: http://www.ebcd.i-am.ru/
Just download the ISO and burn it.
Change the cmos on your machine to boot off CD drive.
And then boot off cd and you have complete access to your
hard drive with all kinds of disk utilities.
Put in another HD and copy contents of first to
second HD. This will work on any OS including linux, actively
supported by developer, and it's FREE!
Have used it on freinds' drives and works like a charm.
