Of course, there are those of us who have been using the same
email address for years, so it was all over the web and
newsgroups long before spamming and viruses were an issue. So
it's too late to set up aliases, and since I've been using the
same address forever I'd really rather not change it to a new
"stealth" address.
Fortunately there are other solutions for this problem, and I'd
recommend them even to people who run a lower profile than I
have:
* As Frank said, don't use a big-ridden virus attractor like
Outlook. I use Pegasus and I have NEVER gotten infected by a
virus in spite of receiving hundreds of emails per day.
* Get a good spamtrap. My ISP has a great one. Together with
one simple filter in my emailer to catch a backdoor entry that
the spamtrap can't cover, more than 97% of the 200+ spams I get
every day never make it into my inbox. I can easily delete the
4-8 spams I do actually receive. If your ISP doesn't offer
filtering, you can install your own spamtrap; see e.g.
