Re: A New PC Recommendation

hi andrew,

you can build a great running machine for very reasonable prices these days.
but consider this: i'm hearing rumblings that the 2ghz and above processors
run too hot and a significant percentage of them only have a life expectancy
of a little more than 1 year before they burn up and stop working. i am
hearing
most manufacturers are not providing more than 1 year warranties on machines
with these newer processors and that the processor manufacturers will
not back-up these processors for more than 1 year.

i am also hearing rumblings that western digital hard drives will only have
1 year warranties now. wd formerly had 3 yr warranties but were losing
considerable money due to the fact that too high of a percentage of their
hard drives didn't last 3 years. wd hd's are very reasonably priced but
there are some that just don't last very long. when they had the 3 yr.
warranties it was worth the gamble to pay their usually cheaper price.
with only a 1 year warranty you are taking a chance on a wd hard drive.
the ones that work and last are great hard drives. unfortunately they
produce lemons too.

if you are going to buy or build something fairly new, i would suggest
you make sure the processor and hard drive have 3 year warranties.
and if you use a 2.0ghz or higher and wd hard drive make sure you
pay the extra money for extended to 3 year warranty if all that is
provided is a 1 year warranty.

good luck,

kevin
