Many thanks for the several replies, the problem was indeed files in a
temporary directory. XP seems to be like Win2000 - the problem directory is
c:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Local Settings\Temp
emptying this directory solved the problem.

remove a file called setup.ini (I think),
