That is not true. There used to be a very active market for used DEC
computers. There were times you could buy a full-functioned MicroVAX for less
than a PC. The reason being that the new owner had to buy (license) the
operating system from DEC, at a higher cost than the hardware was going for.
Eventually the used computer industry badgered DEC into an agreement for
reduced prices, but as far as I can remember, they never allowed a free
transfer from the original customer.
