Gary,
There is a detailed review of dual AMD processors (760MPX) on
http://www.anandtech.com/index.html They give the plusses and minuses of
a dual cpu AMD machine. The article is a follow up of one they did in June
when the processors first came out. Well worth the read.
I built a single processor AMD machine with a 1 MHz CPU about a year ago
when there was a lot of negative press about the AMD processors. The CPU
has held up and I have had no problems with my machine. Based on my
experience to date, the AMD processors give better price/performance than
Intel CPU's. One thing you should note is that you have to buy the MP
chips, the XP chips do not work in a dual cpu configuration.
Hope that helps.
Ed

| Hi Tai,
|
| I'm in the market for a dual-CPU system. I'm tired of fighting with
| TS for the CPU, so I want to give it its own CPU to eat while the
| other one pays attention to me. (Bob Scott, can you also comment?
| You recently said you're running dual CPUs so maybe you can help.)
|
| I had a line on a dual-Xeon HP system from a reseller but the bozos
| have been unable to deliver on the system they promised me over a
| month ago, so I'm looking for another solution.
|
| What would you & your HW freak friends recommend for this situation?
| I just visited a Fry's in Phoenix (visiting in-laws for Christmas)
| and they recommended a Tyan Tiger MP mobo (about $200) with a pair of
| 1.6 Athlons (about $200 ea). One supposed expert told me that AMD
| CPUs are like Jaguars -- fast and sleek when they run, but very
| trouble-prone. The Fry's guy said they'd had no problems with
| Athlons, and since Intel had discontinued the P3, and since the only
| mobo that supports dual-CPU doesn't have an AGP slot, he thought the
| Athlon was a better answer. What's your read on that?
|
| He also recommended a $150 case (can't remember the brand offhand)
| because the dual-CPU "server-class" boards supposedly demand more &
| don't work as well in the standard cases.
|
| So about $600 for mobo & CPUs, maybe $150 for 512MB of ECC RAM, $80-
| 100 for a video board, $120 for a 40-60GB HD, $50-150 for a CD-RW
| depending on how fancy you want to get, and $150 for a case, I'm
| looking at about $1200 for this system. Reasonable?
