There are lots of disadvantages, most of which are obvious - risk of theft,
or damage by fire, it's illiquid, earns no interest, in most cases the
"commission" is very steep, and if the cataclysm is so bad that you're
worried that insured bank accounts are worthless, there's no guarantee that
anyone will even want any gold.
