I do not know of american law, but it looks to me that if someone released a
package that was something that worked on itīs own, and released an
interface to that package for programmers. Then if one of the applications
that was brought forward was an open source implementation of an interface
that real EL and translated into whatever the package wants, there would
actually be very hard to find someone to sue.
The package for delivering an interface? The open source for existing?
Thing is though, easy language is quite advanced in its behaviour. It is
hard to emulate it, and doing so you will lose some advantages VB/VC++ have
possibility to offer, and some clarity to what is really happening as well.
What is needed is probably not a 1 to 1 translator, but another environment
and something that makes it easy to port into that one.
Actually, that has to be enough, since the competition is Omega who no
longer supports portability between TS PRO and the other packages they have.
I have rewritten a lot of Easy Language to C++, and it turns out that the
advantage of object orientation is some places makes code a lot better than
easy language.
So I think the route to go is to do a new easy language, not VB or C++, but
something new, utilising object oriented features, and then add translators
that makes it easy to port.
