Your question is easily answered... Microsoft holds your data hostage.
Once your email is in Microsoft Outlook there is no way to get it
*outside* of the program. You are thus forced to use Microsoft mailers as
your mail client for eternity.

That doesn't sound like an advantage to me.

There *is* one way to get your mail outside of Outlook and that is by
moving your mail and folders onto an IMAP server. Then you can use any
client you choose. You won't be able to move your addressbook or contacts
over this way though.

Your Contacts and addressbook can be exported to a spreadsheet format
but Microsoft makes this VERY difficult to do because you have to export
your contact lists one at a time... and even then only to spreadsheet (XLS
or CSV) formats. But this is a far cry from vCard or another usable
format.

You might be able to migrate your addressbook and contacts out to an LDAP
server although I haven't tried this.

As for Outlook itself, the program is cluttered with way too many features
that sometimes are unusable or buggy. Microsoft's scheme of "accounts"
and "profiles" are incredibly tangled and poorly designed. The interface
is inconsistant. Outlook does not handle RTF format properly so you
pretty much have to use HTML to send formated text. Outlook is an open
doorway for hackers and viruses...

Well, I could go on and on.

I once used Outlook as my primary mailer but migrated out to Linux based
Netscape simple because Windows and Outlook wedged too often and posed to
great a security threat to my corporate data. Netscape mail isn't as
"pretty" and feature-filled as Outlook, but at least it gets the job done.
