If Ensign can do it Omega should be able to do it. Its only a question of will power. Just like the composite vs individual breadth symbols and the open interest problem.

Subject: Ensign: Announcing Ethernet connection to DTN receivers

Hi from Ensign Software,

We have great news you need to know about as a DTN user.

Ethernet Connection

The current version of Ensign Windows can connect to the DTN D8000 and D8080 Velocity receiver boxes using the Ethernet port. Performance measurements we have made show the Ethernet connection handles 40 times more data than a 115K baud serial port. If your computer has an Ethernet port, you really should get connected to the DTN receiver using Ethernet. The connection is so fast and accurate, gone are the days of waiting for a news story to download or dropping quotes because of port overruns. I love it and I am very excited about it.

These instructions are for setting up the 10Base-T Ethernet port.

Click the Start button, and select Settings | Control Panel as shown. On the Control Panel double click the Network icon that is shown above and you arrive at the following form.

In the list of installed network components, select the TCP/IP component for your Ethernet device, and click the Properties button to display the following form.

Select the 'IP Address' tab. Select the 'Specify an IP Address' bullet and enter the IP Address and Subnet Mask values as shown. Click the OK buttons to close the forms. Your system may inform you that the computer needs to reboot for the change to be effective. Follow the prompts to reboot. You may be asked to insert your Windows CD in the CD drive so that drivers can be loaded.

While you can connect through a hub, the preferred method is to connect the DTN receiver directly to the 10Base-T Ethernet card in your computer using a cable that has its incoming and outgoing data lines swapped (similar to a null modem serial cable). A 15 foot cable from a local computer store costs $10. If you need to buy an Ethernet card to install in your computer, they cost under $20.

DTN strongly recommends a private network connection to prevent the increased message traffic from swamping an existing network. Also, there may be a security breech in the retransmission of exchange data by sending it across an intranet. For computers already on a network, a private network can be created by installing a second Ethernet card and connecting directly to the DTN receiver.

If you must use a configuration other than the default, the TCP and UDP addresses and ports can be changed by editing entries in the C:\Ensign\Inifile\Ensign.ini file. Most users will be able to use the defaults.

In Ensign Windows, click menu SetUp | Connection and select the Ethernet bullet as shown above. If your installation, IP address, and cable are correct, you will see a flow of data start immediately.

Note: The DTN receiver must be Reset to be able to use its serial port after it has been used with the Ethernet port.

Disable Auto Dial Connection

Problem: Every attempt to connect to the Ethernet starts up a dialer for an Internet modem connection.
Solution: Change the setting in your Internet Explorer to 'Never dial a connection'.

Run your Internet Explorer program and click menu Tools | Internet Options to display this form.

Select the 'Never dial a connection' bullet. Click the LAN Settings button to display this form.

Check the 'Automatically detect settings' box, and close the forms by clicking the OK buttons.

Quotes | Refresh | Market Group

There is a new menu item that can be used to refresh every symbol record in a market group. Click the Quote button. Click a market group button on the bottom of the quote page. Now select menu Quotes | Refresh | Market Group. (Previously you were limited to refreshing just the Visible Rows on the quote page.)

Time tests: Using a 115K baud serial port, the records download at a rate of 2.5 per second. Using the Ethernet port, the records download at a rate of 100+ per second.

So, we can refresh all 8000 Nasdaq symbols with an Ethernet connection in under 80 seconds, whereas, the serial port refresh will take 50+ minutes.
