don't bet on the win2k and winME will merge
in the next generation.
we have very reliable source that MS failed to
merge win98 into winNT4 when they were trying to
create win2k - the result is the winME that we
see now, a scrambled up version of win98 :)
MS found that putting win98 stuff (effectively
now winME stuff) specifically the 16-bit
compatibility thing, into the 32-bit Win2K, would
crash everything. The only solution is to leave
win98 as it is and still squeeze some money by
giving it a new look (winME) :)
The MSDN new developer docs all pointed to new
win API calls that are common to both winME and
win2K - implying they have added a layer of
function calls to make new winME apps having
better chance to be compatible with win2K decendent.
The phase out period could take long because
tons of win98 apps were created in year 1999 and 2000.
They are not compatible in anyway with win2K.
Most people will decide not to upgrade, just like
old Win3.1 are still in use :)
So those who are interested in using their home
computers for trading purpose, try to get another
computer with WinNT/Win2K for trading instead!
And, minimize purchase of software that are
compatible with win98/ME only. It can save you a
lot of hassle in the long run.
