I tried VNC last year.  It was remarkably easy to set up.
But it was slow, even with a 100Mbs LAN.   ANd it wouldn't 
work from a slow computer to a much faster one.  It might be
better this year.

For non-WAN connectivity, remote KVM is the way to go.
Pure hardware solution.  

Always be-ware of soft-ware !
