Linux? free not!

Hello omega-list,

some time back (over a year or two) i got on this linux kick too.
after using hp-u10 (a flavor of unix) and it predecessors of many
years i was glad to see linux come and kick some arrogant solaris and
hp butt. i even got ts to run on linux (just the charting mod) using
a network to poll the data from the server running on nt.

linux is not free, my time is worth something. even at 10 bucks an
hour, unix-linux has cost me and or someone who paid me over a 10 year
period at least half a million dollars to just be able to use it and
try and keep up whats changing next. its really an endless trap of
evolutionary development as are most things software related.

now that win 2000 is out i have to say GREAT i love the thing.
finally i belive that gates finally got one right. i liked nt in
fact in its final stages here. i found the os very stable and very
easy to work with. i have been running the server edition on most all
my network for years and it has not been as fast as linux - but a whole
lot easier to maintain and hack around on.

the linux community has yet to address all the installation problems
that plague them. they stick their head in the sand and say - what
an idiot. i know - i have done some name calling. i regret every
time i have ever mentioned linux to someone. it cost me time money
and friendship. however i feel that i personally must keep up and so i
i am on most of the major linux mail list.

i view linux just as i view laptops, i keep stalling to get real
serious because it just keeps getting better and better. but am i
ready to fully commit - no - only when i must spend months setting up
my beowulf to run some complicated data mining research project.
which btw both it and the cray can run the calculations in about the
blink of an eye. could i have done it in windows? yes i could have
sectioned off the project and risked the contamination of combining
many runs into a final synopsis. but i had rather take the time - do
it right and run one massive analysis project all at one time.

it takes big corporate funding to run projects like this and thats why
you will see dell and compaq as well as ibm push linux (as they
should because its good) in corporate environments. but for the
average guy who has a day job (other than linux admin) forget it your
not missing anything i promise. except lots of high blood pressure
frustration.
