Dear Ullrich,
Computer #1 = P233 w/Colorgraphic 4-Monitor card + Win 98 SE + QFeed + DynaStore
(on floor under desk)
2 Monitors used for QCharts (MSFT, INDU,NDX,etc), 1 for CyberX + DynaStore, 1 Spare
(all horizontal on desk top)
Computer #2 = P3/500 w/Colorgraphic 4-Monitor card + Win 98 SE + TS 4.23 (on floor
under desk)
1 Monitor for MSFT 50-Tick, 1 Monitor for MSFT + S&P 1 Minute (my two main trading
monitors), 1 Monitor for TICK, 1 for TS Server and as Spare (all horizontal on
shelf above desk and other monitors)
No Alarms --- all silent. What I'm really doing is looking for the confluence of
certain patterns to all "line up," so, no, I'm not really looking at all the
monitors simultaneously. Most of the time, I find the markets pretty chaotic
(meaning that what I'm seeing on several monitors doesn't "line up"), so I stand
aside and wait. But when several of the monitors all begin to show the same thing
("line up"), that's action time. Years ago, had someone said to me that they
watched multiple monitors while trading, I would have thought that that must mean
they must have a lot more eyes and coordination than I to keep track of it all.
Let me assure you, however, that I am one slow old fart who can hardly keep two,
much less three, balls up in the air at once, so if I can keep track of eight
monitors and still push the mouse button to initiate a trade, it ain't no BFD.
No obvious compatibility problems, except TS4 Server gets overloaded by ticks from
DynaStore in fast markets.
Yes, I paid oodles of $$$ for my first Multi-monitor card, around 10 years ago. It
was a $2000 STB 4-monitor card that I got at 1/3 off. Since I discovered eBay,
however, things have been different. I paid $75 each for these Colorgraphic cards
($600 retail) and and around $75 for 15" and $125 for 17" Sony or comparable
monitors (and I generally buy them from a local seller so I don't have to pay any
S/H, which on a monitor is usually around $50). A 4-monitor setup costs me around
$75 for the card plus 2 x $75 for 2-15" monitors plus 2 x $125 for 2-17" monitors =
$75 + $150 + $250 = $475. For example, this gives substantially more video area
(and of course takes up more desk space) than a traditional card ($???) plus a 21"
monitor, which retails for around $1000 and sells on eBay for $600-800 (for Sony or
comparable quality).
To each his own. As for me, I reached that point in life where I'm happy if I can
get anything to work with any remote degree of reliability and consistency. The
foregoing worked for me last week and, God willing, I'm counting on it to do so
this week, too. Hallelujah! Life is rich.
Sincerely,
Richard
