When you had both drives hooked up to your computer and did the file
transfer the machine recognized both hard drives.  Your C drive was jumpered
to be the master and the D drive was configured to be a slave.  When you
removed your C drive you have to set the jumpers on the D drive to make it
the master.  Your CMOS will then recognize it.  Most hard drives have info
on the case to tell you how to hardware jumper your drive.
