Typically, you get ADSL through your local phone company and cable modem
through your cable carrier.
Advantages of ADSL
faster,
dedicated line between you and your telephone switch. No one sees your
internet traffic except you and your ISP. Whatever speed service you've
ordered is what you get regardless of how many others sign up for the ADSL
service in your neighborhood.
you get to chose your ISP
Disadvantages of ADSL:
slightly more expensive
Not generally available unless you live within 4 Km of your nearest ADSL
ready telephone switch
Advantages of Cable Modem
cheaper (but not by much)
More likely to be available in your area.
Disadvantages of Cable Modem
You share a 10 Megabit/sec. ethernet collision domain (sort of a high speed
party line) with everyone in your neighborhood. Your neighbors can see
your internet traffic if they run Lanalyzer or sniffer on their PCs.
As more people in your neighborhood sign up for Cable Modem service, your
performance will degrade.
