This is baloney.  The network card and the com ports are
independent. However, it is possible that they commandeered
the comport IRQ for the network card.  You may have to remove
something (like a modem?) to free an IRQ.

I use an external modem instead of internal for this reason.
BMI cable into COM2, and a network card.  All work, even
simultaneously.
