I think Dan was referring to the NASDAQ exchange, not the futures contract
traded at the CME. As far as I know, the NASDAQ doesn't have, nor did it
ever have, a physical pit for trading. It's always been completely
electronic, and at volumes exceeding 1 billion shares/day, seems to have
held up pretty well.
