Can't help on the file erase mystery.

However, on another subject,  you may already know this, but consider
keeping your computers running 24 hours a day.  Thermal heat is a
killer...when it goes from cold to hot after power up and vice versa.
Especially for harddrives and circuit board joints, it pays to keep
everything on and warm... (mechanical expansion and contraction causes
intermittence)

I've had some computers here running for five years straight. They only die
because of obsolescence.   :o)
