Yes, Omega did announce that there will be a Y2K patch for TS 4.0 and I have
no reason to doubt that they will do their best to provide it.
My point is that it is impossible for anyone in the software business to
absolutely guarantee a flawless patch that will be guaranteed to work 100%
at the turn of the millennium. The FAA can't guarantee that air traffic
control systems won't have serious problems-- Major Power and Communication
companies with virtually unlimited budgets cannot guarantee that they won't
have problems.
BMI has demonstrated several times over the past few months that they love
to suddenly make un-announced changes to their data-feed that negatively
affects the livelihood of thousands of customers-- without any advance
thought of the consequences or any warning that major problems are likely.
With the degree of irresponsibility and incompetence that is rampant in this
industry and companies like BMI randomly tampering with the format and
content of their feed-- do you really think any Y2K patch could be
guaranteed to work flawlessly-- no matter how much testing precedes its release?
Omega is only one small cog in a network of machinery that involves many
Exchanges, data delivery and routing systems, data providers and
re-packagers, satellite up-links, satellites themselves, down-links,
micro-wave links, TV Cable systems, FM and wireless delivery systems, etc., etc.
If anyone seriously thinks that a complex network, made up of many
independent high-tech components, isn't vulnerable to Y2K glitches, they've
probably been living in a cave since the last turn of a millennium...
