For the time being, internet order entry will continue to have an element of
unreliability. Furthermore, its reliability is somewhat unpredictable, as
its hard to know at any specific moment in time whether there is a clear
path to the server at the brokerage company.
Solutions for this problem are to avoid using the internet, and instead
using a dedicated phone/communications line. Timber Hill has this option,
and Globex terminals are also configured this way. Naturally the downside
is the phone fees for staying connected during the day. So I guess each
trader can decide if its a viable option for them. Originally, LFG had an
option to use a dial-up ISDN line to their computer for order entry. An
isdn connection can be established in under a second, which made it the
perfect method for ensuring reliability, while avoiding high phone costs.
Unfortunately, LFG never spent the time to make it reliable, and instead
moved to the more mass market internet based order entry.
