Normally I'd consider a long-winded post like the one that follows to be
off-topic. However, a lot of us email TS screen shots and/or post them
to web pages so here goes.
> Just export an image to .jpg and .gif formats and compare their size. I
> think the .jpg format is smaller.
Not for images with only a few colors. For TS screen captures, GIFs are
smaller and, as important, better quality.
JPGs store all images with 16 million colors (24 bits/pixel = big file
size) and use "lossy" compression (poor image quality). GIFs only store
the actual colors used and do not "lose" any information but they have a
limit of 256 colors. GIFs with more than 256 colors get dithered (poor
quality) and the files get big. Generally, somewhere around 100 colors
is the breakeven point on file size with GIF still holding the edge in
image quality. Above 256 colors, JPG is better.
So, for photos and other images with lots of colors, JPGs are smaller
and better quality. For images with only a few colors, like TS screen
captures, GIFs are smaller and better quality. TS only uses 16 colors.
TS full-screen capture:
BMP, 2289K, excellent quality
GIF, 59K, excellent quality
JPG (low compression), 411K, fair-good quality
JPG (high compression), 273K, poor quality
