JPG is usually best for photos and other complex images that have
lots of colors and gradual color changes from one pixel to the next.
You can specify a high compression for JPG that results in a smaller
file size, but especially for abrupt changes (like going from a black
chart background to a green price bar) you end up with "noisy" and
low-quality images.
GIF is best for simple images with few colors and large expanses of
the same color, like charts and other simple computer-generated
diagrams.
