Try NT Workstation for small lans. IT works great for me and its compatible
with virtually the rest of the world. I have found that that kind of
compatiblity really helps when tackling problematic issues.

one more comment: what i've read about linux, it seems it's a good
choice for small lan's, ie, for private trading operations. nt server
any flavor may be overkill.
but my main concern is getting a usable data server so we might
experience the joys of linux's networking capabilities. it seems that
the exchanges, and indirectly, the data vendors, are holding the
server developers hostage over data distribution on a network. this
remains the largest obstacle to a truly "open" trading platform.
