Re: Win-98 Upgrade

FWIW...

I, too, held off for a number of weeks and finally upgraded last weekend
to Win98.

The only mistake I made was holding off for a number of weeks! Win98 is
superb, at least on my Dell XPS R400 and my software mix. I'm quite sure
that there is hardware/software combos out there that would cause Win98
conflicts. I have, however, yet to find a problem and I would consider
myself an *extreme* poweruser.

Not only do I run a variety of trading software on my machine
(SuperCharts, RealTick III) but I do development in both Visual Basic
and C++. I used to have to turn my computer off each night because,
invariably due to Win95 memory leaks, the system would crash the next
day. I have experiences exactly ZERO crashes since upgrading to Win98.

Two things I've found regarding Win98. First, already mentioned, the
system is far more stable. The other thing that is fabulous has been the
ability to add a second monitor. My Dell came with a 19" monitor, but
after running RealTick III, it's quite obvious that the more screen real
estate, the better. By adding a 17" monitor and video card I had from my
old P133, I have now considerably more screen space, which is fantastic
when one is running charts, level II windows and Time of Sales screens.
I am seriously considering buying a 21" monitor and running all three
screens.

Anyway, bottom line for me, Win98 was definitely worth it. Actually, it
didn't cost me anything as I bought my Dell R400 at the time right
before Win98 was released and it included the free upgrade. As always,
YMMV, but for me it was a great decision.

Oh, yes, my system does run faster. The R400 is already blindingly fast,
but with FAT32, things are even better than before, not to mention it's
like getting a brand new hard drive.

Finally, make sure you back up your system! This is important anytime
you make significant changes to your computer. It is doubly important
when you make OS changes.

Joe Balsamo
