My ISP is NetLink in New Zealand, so I checked with them the authenticity of
the Daniel Ayers of NetLink quoted warning about the dangers of accessing
the Internet using Windows 95 with file sharing enabled over a network.
A number of you have wondered whether it was just another hoax. Well,
Daniel is a real person, the issue is for real, and his confirmation of this
follows.
I chatted to him over the phone. His advice was to disable file sharing
while using the Internet, but to at least set passwords for file sharing
over the network. He confirmed that it was a good idea to visit the
rootshell site (http://www.rootshell.com/) and check that it couldn't see
your files. He also confirmed that using a protocol other than TCP/IP for
your network was no protection.
Daniel's slant was not that Windows 95 was seriously flawed, but that people
could naively set it up in a way that left them vulnerable and that they
needed to be aware of the danger.
