I have Excel 97 dated 11/17/96. It *is* Y2K compliant. 
It will assume that year 00 is 2000 but, if you tell it otherwise, it
will remember the correct year even though it is only displaying 2
digits. If there is any question, just format the date column to display
all 4 digits.
