Unfortunately, you can't assume IRQ 5 & 7 -- every machine and set-up is
different.
   
Coming close only counts in Horse Shoes and Hand Grenades.    
(Hmmmm -- come to think of it, a possibly viable solution for some of those
old computers  :)
    
The suggestion to restore the defaults will probably not work either, since
the defaults would reset to some factory standard that may or may not have
ever existed in that particular machine. 
       
It would not include the modifications that were made when the 2nd LPT was
added, nor any other alterations since the original manufacture.  Restoring
unknown defaults could make the situation worse due to lack of references to
updated settings.
