I had similar experiences to those you describe with "respected" and
well-known vendors, authors, etc. -- but it was back in the mid '80s. I
discovered that there are two driving principles that allow these people to
survive and prosper.
1. They know that most people may initially get upset but they will
eventually deal personally with being conned-- They also know that people
generally don't want anyone else to find out how stupid they were, so they
won't tell anyone what happened.
2. Most people will just move on from a bad experience or con-job and not
bother to seek a refund.
