We're 8000' high and during summer we get daily quick afternoon thunderstorms
accompanied by major lightening. The strikes knock out parts of the electric
system about once a week for a couple of hours. Aside from that, the electricity
during the summer, when loads are high, is very uneven. Each computer/17"
monitor runs on 450w American Power Supply UPS - no reason for laser printer to
be on UPS. I rarely hear anything from the UPS during the winter, but it does
lots of beeping all summer (day and night) indicating it's sitting on many power
drops and flunctuations. It keeps on ticking when we lose power for a few
minutes, but I shut everything down if power doesn't come back up pretty
quickly. When the lightening comes, I pull the plugs on both UPS removing all
equipment from the electrical system - there is nothing you can buy which will
stand up to the power of a lightening bolt. If I had to be up continuously,
which I don't, I would not rely upon a UPS - I would find the best generator
money can buy and use it as my only power source during the summer.
