This is all interesting.   I sure would be mad as a hornet if I'd been treated
this way even over a floppy.  My last contact with Gateway was over a floppy
that died.  They sent me a floppy, controller, cables, and everything else
that might be involved.  Helped my figure out what I needed, and graciously
accepted back what I didn't need, telling me just to keep the cables if I ever
needed them.   Since it turned out my only problem was dust, my cost was $10
for UPS.   This on an out of waranty machine.   This is the way I expect to be
treated.
