I would strongly recommend Ethernet for the physical connection.
High-quality Ethernet cards are now available for throw-away prices. If
you only wish to connect two machines, you can do this without any
hardware other than the cards, using a cable with a "twist." More than
two machines (including notebooks) can be thrown into the equation with
the addition of a very inexpensive hub. All the software you need is
built into Win95 or WinNT. Once you get used to Ethernet speed, you'll
never consider parallel port comm acceptable again.
I have networked my machines. One of the most useful things I do with it
is transfer current work to and from my notebook. Since I have put my
printers on the network, printing from the notebook is now a trivial
exercise.
