I use closing EOD data because that's what I've tested.
As to keeping track of positions, when I'm in the market I use a low-
tech method suited to my needs. I create a Yahoo! portfolio for my
holdings and simply download it via web-query into an Excel
spreadsheet. I wrote a couple of simple macros to run whatever
statistics I want to see (which are minimal), and keep a chart of my
equity. Only takes a few seconds nightly to update and it tells me
what's important for me to know.
