I asked this question of Equis Support about a year ago. Here was their
reply.
Claud
Claud,
There is another method that
can be used but it is more time consuming and a bit more complicated.
The FAQ below will walk you through how to set up your index using the
8.0.
The following instructions are
for creating a composite plot for eight different securities, each
security with a different weight. We will call the securities A, B, C,
D, E, F, G and H.
In the DownLoader create four
composites. Assign each component of each composite its appropriate
weighting factor. Choose Add as the operation for each composite. For
this example the resulting composites are called AB, CD, EF, and GH.
Note: both components of a given composite must be in the same
directory.
In MetaStock, open up all
four composites. Choose Window | Stack to show them all on the screen
at one time. Note: make sure that 'Remove Existing Charts' is not
selected under File | Open when opening the charts.
Create a custom indicator
containing the formula C+P
Click on the CD plot and drag
it onto the same chart as the AB composite. Close the CD chart.
Drag the C+P indicator and
drop it onto the CD plot. Note: before dropping the indicator, make
sure the CD plot turns pink. When you see the scaling menu, choose
'Overlay without scale'.
Drag the resulting plot and
drop in into the EF chart. Close the AB chart.
Drag the C+P indicator and
drop it onto the new indicator plot in the EF chart. Note: before
dropping the indicator, make sure the other indicator plot turns pink.
When you see the scaling menu, choose 'Overlay without scale'.
Drag the resulting plot
onto the GH chart. Close the EF chart.
Drag the C+P indicator and
drop it onto the new indicator plot in the GH chart. Note: before
dropping the indicator, make sure the other indicator plot turns pink.
When you see the scaling menu, choose 'Overlay without scale'.
The resulting plot is the
end result. You can take this plot and drop it into any chart that you
would like. MetaStock automatically remembers what components were used
to calculate it. It will automatically be updated from the information
in all eight securities.
Thanks,
Stephanie Bellon

Hi everyone.
I've read the Manual about creating composite securities. The problem
being that MS8 (as far as I can see)only allows you to have security A
and security B.
I'm looking at around 300 stocks, and I want to be able to build an
index for them.
I thought some lateral thinking might be required here. I'm out of
ideas.
Any takers?
