It sounds like you're having one of several problems, but which one
is
a guess.
What you are talking about seems to happen with XP service pack
2
compatibility issues. When MS 9.0 is run on service pack 1, I don't
hear about as many problems. You can uninstall service pack 2 and
check
MS again. You can change the emulation of XP to win98 or
win2000. Or you can
do what I do and run win 2000 only. Even when I
upgrade to new computers I
load win 2000. No problems at all--fast
and stable. It's NT without the
gloss. Big difference. XP easy is
sometimes a lot harder.
Hyper
threading is of little value to MS and seems to cause a lot of
problems. I
don't know if your bios would let you change that, or if
it's even enabled.
It could also be a problem with maxlocksperfile settings. The default
is 9500 and you really need 250000 unless you're running Novell
netware
which can't handle that change. There are several registry
entries for
maxlocksperfile. I think you only need to use the one in
the Equis section.
I don't think you need to change the Jet 4 entry.
This requires some tricky
registry editing so you'll have to ask MS
tech support help with that. I'm
not going to destroy your registry
with something I left out.
It
could be another program on your system using too many resources.
MS needs a
lot of resources for the tester. The tester is an Access
application so the
solution has something to do with Acess
compatibility and XP issues. If you
search the Microsoft site for
Acess and XP issues, you might find the
answer--among the 10,000
pages of fixes you'll find. It can be stuff like
your video card's
accelerator, etc. (Turn off your video acceleration unless
you
playing games between systems tests.) You never know what's typing up
systems resources.
One other thing you might want to look at is
what's loading when you
boot up. You may have virus, trojan horse or
transponder parasites
that are taking up the systems resources MS needs. You
can see what's
up on boot with HiJackThis. Don't let HiJackThis fix anything
until
you're sure of what's wrong. It's free. You'll be surprised how much
stuff is getting loaded. You can also run a copy of TaskInfo to see
what's reading, writing and typing up CPU time as you run the
tester.
If you have a Dell, watchout for the autoupdate feature. Turn
that
off. That can cause problems with Access.
You can run the
compatibility wizard, but you probably won't get much
out of that.
I
saw an earlier post complaining about Equis and asking why they
don't do
more to fix every windows compatibility issue. Before I
retired, the company
I managed sold complex data acquisition and
instrument control software to
network and control almost all of our
200 products. We tested it on dozens
of platforms, but it's
impossible to test software on every OS configuration
and component
array that a customer might have.
Customer expect
miracles. Some wanted our software to work on Apple
computers, some wanted a
DOS version, some thought not only should it
control our instruments but it
should control instruments from HP and
Tektronics, and some thought it
should be free.
I'm not defending Equis. They've left far too many bugs
in MS and
frankly they don't care. They've known about issues as far as
three
releases back and have done nothing because Reuters doesn't want to
spend programming resources on MS when individual traders are not
where
the money is at. It's the institutional market they want.
However, for
Equis it's hard to have all the answers to windows
problems when Microsoft
doesn't have them--and even if they did, they
wouldn't tell you.
I
hope one of these fixes works for you, or you can get a copy of
win2000. I
know that works.
