One of the serious problems (for me) of Metastock is the way it
organises the local data. In my system it is arranged under a folder
for each letter ie
\asx\a
\asx\b
\asx\c
\asx\d etc...
I guess this is to get around the problem with only allowing 6,000
equities in any one folder. I presume that this would be a problem in
the USA, but it is not here in Australia (presumably).
It is a problem for two reasons - I canot quickly load a chart unless
it is in the same folder - ie the Next and Prev securty buttons only
work in the current folder.
I also cannot easily locate a stock if I do not know the ticker
symbol. I can usually guess the first letter (which is all I need to
find the folder), but this might not always be the case.
The REAL problem is that I cannot easily run Explorations on the
whole equity list. I would love to hear how other people do it - I
have spent many hours on trying to work out how to do this easily,
but still have not been able to come up with a good way of doing it.
My current systen was worked out like this -
I load an Exploration, then Add all the data folders manually - ie
add all 26 folders one by one. A pain.
Then I go through the displayed list of securities - some 4,000 or
so, I think. Then I manually deleted all the Options - or rather all
the options and any ticker with a symbol length of 4 or more
characters. You MUST do this from the bottom of the list - otherwise
after you remove each one, the display resorts and it stuffs you up.
Anyway, I eventually did this after many hours of marking and
deleting. A REAL pain.
Then I saved this list in Favourites as "All Stocks as of Jan 2005".
This now works - when I do an Exploration, I simply load this list
each time.
So while I am up and running for the time being, I can see problems
coming up. What happens when new stocks are added. Ones are deleted?
How do I update my list - other than to manually add or delete each
stock as I find out about it (if I ever do). How do I remove non-
trading stocks?
I can see maintenace as being the death of this thing. All I can see
is that I will have to go through this whole process in 6 months time
again - and I REALLY do not want to do that. My thoughts are that I
am simply doing it all wrong - this software is so good it could not
fall down in such a fundamental way. So I must have missed something
along the way.
In similar vein - how do I search the ASX200? I need to make up a
list that contains jsut the ASX200. Since this changes all the time,
it also becomes unworkable.
How do you people out there organise your data?
I have thought about moving all stocks into one folder, but this is
not really viable. With Options - we might actually have more than
6,000 - so that might be a limitation. But more importantly, most
third party EOD data downloaders/subscription services put data into
these particular folder structures - there is nothing you can do
about it.
Your ideas would be welcome.
