Richard, the best solution I have is based on the URSC plug-in kit.

With the aid of its stock-filtering function, I can keep my stock 
database in any folder configuration I wish, yet I can create and 
isolate my own multiple personal favourites stock portfolios
- for both system testing and exploration purposes.

These personal favourites lists are stored in simple external text 
files, and unlike MetaStock's favourites' dta file, are transportable 
and non-volatile (safe).
