Harry,
back in the spring my system tester crashed and gave me two error msgs.
The first was "A fatal error occurred attempting to discard a result".
This of course lead to the MaxLocksperFile problem.
The second was "An error occurred in the system tester".
With this one the system tester would not run to completion and would crash.
Below is what they gave me to fix it. It worked and solved my problem. You
know where I am now.
I have no idea if doing this would help you or not. If you do decide to do
this, be sure to back stuff up
before you do it.

OK, now we need to do a bit of 'surgery'. Before we do, however, do you
have any custom System Tests of your own? Have you purchased any
add-ons that put in special System Tests?
If you have customer System Tests, then before doing the surgery steps
below, you'll want to use The Organizer (under any of the tools that use
formulas) to export your custom System Tests to a safe location.
If you purchase any add-ons, once the surgery is over you'll need to
reinstall them.
Surgery Steps (I assume a typical installation):
1. With MetaStock closed, go into Windows Explorer (right+click Start,
choose Explore) 2. On the left, under the C: driver, find Program Files
(NOT
"Programs") and click the + sign next to it
3. Then find the Equis folder and click its + sign
4. Then find the MetaStock folder and click on the folder itself so the
name highlights and you can see its contents at the right 5. In the list
of contents at the line find and delete anything beginning with
"ST_DATA" 6. In the list of contents, find the Results subfolder, and
delete it 7. Exit from the Windows Explorer
Surgery Recovery Steps
1. Reinstall MetaStock, however, during the process, when it says
"duplicate tools detected", normally you'd say Yes, Overwrite, but this
time, say NO, do not overwrite 2. Once installation is complete, launch
MetaStock, use The Organizer to import your customer System Tests
(assuming you had exported them earlier) 3. If you had System Tests from
add-ons, exit MetaStock, reinstall your add-ons 4. Test the System
Tester to see if the error has gone away
