Chuck:

I just don't do a good job of describing what I want to do, and/or why I want to do it.

Why don't I just download all "new data"? Because some of my current data is 12-15 years old, and I don't want to loose it. Most data suppliers (at least the ones that I am looking at) don't keep data that old.

The software that I am getting rid of (Windows on Wallstreet) had a very simple system for sorting securities built in. There was one master list of securities, and you could sort/extract by any sector or exchange or whatever designation you defined. As I user, I didn't know (or need to know) what folder the data was in. All cross indexing was done by the program.

But Metastock doesn't seem to work that way. So I was trying to put the stocks into folders that had some order to them (such as common stocks), since the user (me) has to now keep track of exactly which folder holds what security. (I know there is a Find feature, but to use that I need the symbol of the stock, not simply whether it is common, preferred, etc.)

And yes, I did find that feature in Copy which you described. That was what the Equis rep told me about. But I have data on about 10,000 stocks and funds, and I really don't want to print out a list of my current stocks, compare them line by line to what is in the Metastock list, and then manually delete each one that is not a common stock, and then go through the reverse exercise for what are preferred stocks, etc. I would like to spend my time using Metastock's tools to analyze the data; not spending it getting the data in a form that I can use. I thought that was what computers programs were for <g>.
