Last year the Justice Department lost an appeal to the USA Supreme
Court. Legal analysts are now saying there is little chance MSFT will
be broken up. Moreover, with a new president in office, there is even
less of a chance this will happen. I would like to see MSFT broken up
because they have become too powerful. Not only do they have an O/S
monopoly, but since 1997 they have taken over the Office software and
programming language categories.
I don't have any problem with MSFT having a monopoly with O/S's. We
need a standard for all software app cos. to abide by. Personally I
like my Win98 (1). I finally have it running the way I want. I'd
like to upgrade to Win98 SE. However, I don't think it's right they
control all 3 categories.
I don't know why Rajesh doesn't like MSFT's products. I do not plan
to upgrade to ME or XP yet because of the new copyright protection
schemes they allegedly contain. See my old post to another forum
below. If you have a lot of MP3's, you should be aware of this
issue. Still, if someone needs to buy a new system next year, surely
the O/S will be Windows ME/XP. All of the best trading related
software is written in Windows. You cannot get around this.
Daniel.

WARNING!!! Windows ME & WHISTLER (Windows XP) Contain New Copyright
Protection Schemes
Windows ME & WHISTLER or Windows XP are supposed to come with the new
Secure Audio Path (SAP) copyright protection schemes. They are
designed to protect against users who like to download multimedia
files (MP3's, MPEG's, etc...) and burn them onto CD-RW's. ME & XP
defeat the purpose of having a PC. If M$ carries out this scheme,
owning a PC is going to be as boring as it was during the '80's. It
looks to me as though they are well on their way to implementation:
The Register Feb 15, 2001:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/archive/16959.html
http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/4/16933.html
This one has some alarming details:
http://www.wired.com/news/technology/0,1282,41614,00.html?tw=wn20010213
It contains details about Secure Audio Path
http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?URL=/library/psdk/wm_media/wmform/htm/understandingsecureaudiopath.htm
Secure Audio Path (SAP) adds static to copyrighted files. It says SAP
is already included in ME (but doesn't seem to be activated yet).
"The SAP system was first included in Windows ME, and will be bundled
in Windows XP". I think Windows Media Player 7 has these protections.
