I think that you must be referring to discount "borkers".  I have a friend who
took his series tests, with Prudentual, and then moved on.  He is now trading
for a shop in San Diego, using shop money, trading bundles of NASDAQ stocks.
I think that he is given about $1,000,000 to work with, and gets to keep half
of his profits.  There are daily mandatory limits on the losses, but large
year end bonuses.  So, does he need the Series exams to do this trading?  I
don't think so, but maybe it helps somehow.  I am certain that it helped him
to get the position.  What you learn is rearly wasted.
