<SPAN
class=263233806-06012001>As mentioned by someone else, the easiest way to do a
one-time transfer of a large amount of data is to remove the disk from the PC
that holds the data and install it as a 2nd disk in the receiving
computer.  You'll have to change the jumper from Master to Slave (assuming
it's an IDE drive that was the Master in the old PC).  This is simple as
the jumpers are clearly marked on most drives.

class=263233806-06012001>Plug the IDE cable that currently connects to the
primary drive, using the 2nd connector on the cable, into the Slave drive.
If your IDE ribbon cable doesn't have two connectors then you'd need to get one
for less than $5.  You don't need to screw the 2nd drive into the PC since
you'll be disconnecting it after the data transfer.  Just lay it on the PC
on top of some foam, or other padding, then boot.

<SPAN
class=263233806-06012001>The PC will still boot from the Master drive and,
assuming the Master has just one partition, the Slave drive will be seen as
drive D:.  Your Registry won't be affected but your CD drive letter will
change.

<SPAN
class=263233806-06012001>Copy the data then power down; unplug the 2nd disk; set
the jumper back to Master; plug it into the original PC; boot up.  Very
clean & simple.  If your IDE cable on the receiving PC doesn't have 2
connectors, check the cable from the old PC.  If it has 2, then use
it.

ribbon cable and connect to the motherboard with red on the same side and
(usually) connect to the disk with the red stripe closest to the power
connector.  Newer connectors have locks that prevent it from being
connected backwards.

  - New Computer
  Thanks gentlemen for all your
  input.

I have decided to use Windows Commander
version 4.51 on both computers as recommended by Chris Baude. It's freeware
  from www.ghisler.com. It requires
connecting the parallel ports on each machine with a special cable.
They advise using a Laplink parallel cable. They also provide the
wiring/pin out diagrams for the cable. With that, I was able to use a
micropatch adapter made by Datatran Corp to make the wire configuration and
tied this to a conventional parallel cable. (The adapter is like a bread
board with a 25 pin male connector on one end and a 25 pin female connector on
the other with space in between to place jumper wires in the correct pin
positions on each end.) WC is set up on one computer as the client and as
the server on the other. Operating from the client, files are readily
copied from one computer to the other. Transfer rates are said to be about
  50Kbps.

I forgot who wanted a program to move data
      from one computer to another.

I have a program that will do the trick
and can send as an email attachment.
There are 2 files (one about 350 KB and
the other 430 KB). All is required is a cable and these 2 files. Just
install your software from the vendor and then transfer the files. I just
transferred a 767MB data file from one computer to another and nothing was
      dropped/lost/screwed-up.
