Unless you have a Network >10x WS's or use a => Dual MoBo, then there is
never a need to trade in "your car for a truck".
WIN2k {and its predecessor 4NT} load a truckfull of applications that are never
ever required by straight forward home or very small network PC users.
Their OS's are slow on and whilst at their startup processes and also slowdown
every time the Opening processes of other resource hungry applications (ACAD,
Word, Excel, MSK etc.) this since both OS's are resource hungry themselves {and
with all the users' security-and-live-event-logging processes active} taking up >2x
the MEM capacity of that of a 9.x OS. Then they both have the nasty habbit too to
continiously run all sorts of unrequired applications and threads simulantainiously
just when you want to run yours. Plain useless and very overdone for normal
everyday home use, eg therefore the above "truck vs car" comparrison.
WinME is an option tho, but only to be considdered by current Win98 and Win95
users. Users of Win98SE do not need the upgrade, they can just go to the
Windows Update site and download and install IE5.5 and the new Media player.
Next year the now beta tested and code named Whistler will finaly be on the market,
which for upgrade to current 9x and ME users will be released as the Win2k-Personal
Edition and that OS will be worth your while waiting for, eg as a Win95/8 or 98SE or
as a ME user. Win2k-Professional Edition will be made available as a new WS-version.
Based on the Win2k kernel, Win2kPE will come as a light -unloaded- edition, eg unloaded
form all the unnecessary running mumbo jumbo applications and threads refered to above,
but included will be the NTFS files system base known from "old" NT, eg that will save you
the regular time spend on disk maintenance, since that NTFS is suppose to be a self
maintaining disk file system.
