I upgraded from Windows 98se to WIndows ME and have been very disappointed.
There is not a lot to Windows ME that is not already in 98se if you visit
the windowsupdate website.
What IS in ME is:
- Movie maker
- 1/2 dozen Internet games
- hidden start menu items
- restore your Windows to a point in time
Overall none of those features really appeal to me. Fortunately I didn't pay
full price for the upgrade.
Even on that issue I think that Microsoft is ripping off customers. The big
companies like COMPAQ pay about US$35 for a full Windows (fair enough they
buy them by the million but!) ... so where do they get off charging US$90
for an UPGRADE (that doesn't contain much).
AND ... I use Windows 2000 at work (I admit I don't trade for a living).
Now that is a significant step forward ... to both NT and 98se.
The only down-side is the cost.
It contains most of the features that were lacking in NT like plug-and-play
and support for newer hardware, etc.
In addition, it provides enhanced user interface to most of the great NT
features which are by far more robust that the 95/98/ME platform.
Interestingly, if you have a reasonable specification machine (and ONLY if),
Windows 2000 is the best performing operating system (Windows) available ...
check out the benchmarks to see.
